God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was evening and there was morning—the first day.

God said, “Let there be an expanse[a] between the waters, and let it separate the water from the water.” God made the expanse, and he separated the water that was below the expanse from the water that was above the expanse, and it was so.
